Work Ethic (def): the principle that hard work is intrinsically virtuous or worthy of reward.
While some individuals try to get by doing as little work as possible, others possess a dedication that leads them to give it their all every day. People who possess a strong work ethic embody certain principles that guide their work behavior, leading them to produce high-quality work consistently and without the prodding that some individuals require to stay on track.
Jonathan Broekman of Homes of Distinction has build his business on these seven basic pillars forming a strong work ethic which he looks for not only in his own agents, but in all professionals.
1. Respectfulness
Displaying grace under pressure - no matter how tight the deadline or heated the tempers - one should always remain poised and tactful. No matter whether serving a customer, meeting with a client, or collaborating with colleagues, people should always do their utmost to respect everyone and their opinions, especially under trying circumstances when emotions tend to get high.
2. Professionalism
Being professional encompasses everything, from how people speak and dress, to the way they treat others. Professionalism is such a broad category, in fact, that it basically encompasses all the other elements of a strong work ethic.
3. Dependability
This means that people can be depended on to keep their promises. Jonathan says that this is shown in little ways that count big: always being on time and prepared for meetings, or delivering work on schedule and on budget. A reputation for reliability will precede those with a good work ethic because they have proven consistently that customers, clients and colleagues can trust them to do whatever they said - people appreciate this stability.
4. Accountability
Taking personal responsibility for actions and outcomes in every situation, and avoid making excuses when things don’t go as planned makes one accountable. This includes admitting mistakes and using them as a learning experience, so they won’t make the same ones again. Accountable people also expect employees to meet the same high standards, and support those who accept responsibility instead of blaming others.
5. Determination
People who refuse to let obstacles stop them while enthusiastically embracing challenges simply cover more ground. The job of an entrepreneur is to solve clients’ problems, so it is essential that people resolve to continually seek better and more innovative answers. With purpose and resilience anyone will push ahead, no matter how far they have to go.
6. Dedication
Being dedicated means not stopping until the job is done, and done right.
“Dedicated people put in the extra hours to get things right, giving attention to detail and devotion to excellence,” says Jonathan. Passion shows in how hard people work, and is seen in the results they achieve.
7. Humility
To acknowledge everyone’s contributions, and freely share credit for accomplishments, is an inspiring and encouraging quality in everyone, not just a leader. Showing gratitude to dedicated colleagues and appreciation to loyal clients displays integrity in spades, and opens one to learning from others. And, while we always take our work seriously, we should strive to maintain a sense of humour about ourselves!
With these seven pillars in place, not to mention the personal satisfaction that comes from a job well done, a good work ethic is easy to create at home, in the office, or in relationships. It is self-fulfilling and the more it is exercised, the easier it becomes to do every day.
