Traditional Zulu Recipe

There are few recipes that truly capture the spirit of South Africa more so than chakalaka. A traditional Zulu recipe used for every occasion, this is a delightful spicy side you’ll want to have in your personal recipe collection. Here is a simple chakalaka recipe for any occasion.

 

Ingredients:

  • ¼  cup Extra Virgin Olive or coconut oil
  • 1 medium red onion diced
  • 1 ½  teaspoon curry powder
  • 2 teaspoons of minced garlic 
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½  teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • ½ teaspoon ginger minced
  • 2 fresh tomatoes
  • 3 cups finely sliced cabbage
  • 2 jalapeno chilies diced with the seeds removed for less heat
  • 1 large grated carrot  
  • 1 medium green pepper diced
  • 1 medium red pepper diced
  • 1 can of baked beans or beans of your choice
  • Salt and pepper to taste
Method:
 
  1. In a large pot, heat oil over medium heat.
  2. Add the diced onion and stir until softened.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic, minced ginger, paprika, curry powder, cayenne pepper, and thyme, continue stirring for about a minute to allow the flavors to come through. 
  4. Add diced tomatoes, bell peppers, carrots and cabbage to the spices.
  5. Simmer for about five minutes, stirring occasionally so the ingredients do not burn.
  6. Finally add the beans, bouillon powder stir for about two to three minutes.
  7. Serve warm alongside your favourite braai meats and classic pap.
Make this recipe your own by adding any ingredients you prefer and experiment with flavour, try a can of chickpeas instead of beans or your favourite chili type. Remember cooking is about creative flavours and enjoying great food with the people you love most.
