The bad news is that you can't always be faced with likeable people -at least not completely, especially if they are family - from the dreaded mother-in-law to even your own child.
But no matter who they are, they know how to push your buttons and drive you insane! Encountering difficult people gives you an unsettling feeling of dread and maybe even anxiety, but the good news is that learning to handle difficult people is a great life skill to learn.
Here are a few handy tips to start the process:
Stay away from the following topics
Accommodating people with extreme differences in perspectives and life choices is difficult. But it is advisable to not engage in these topics: religion, politics, feminism or history.
Not your monkey not your circus
Learn to let go of leading conversations that will add no value or to your life. If your gut instinct tells you that the conversation is going to get heated then change the subject. Leave the table or go and wash the dishes. Find any excuse to remove yourself from this situation. Remember it is not your drama so don't let it get to you.
Set boundaries
People will treat you the way you allow them to. Set boundaries and be clear in the way you communicate. Feeding the drama only allows for more of the same conversation to be perpetuated. There's a fine line between lending a sympathetic ear and getting sucked into their negative emotional spiral.
Dwell on the positives instead of on the negatives and remember that you can always be the bigger person by handling the situation differently.
