Freedom Day

“For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”
  -Nelson Mandela

Freedom Day on 27 April is an annual celebration of South Africa's first non-racial democratic elections of 1994. It is significant because it marks the end of over three hundred years of colonialism, segregation and white-minority rule, and the establishment of a new democratic government led by Nelson Mandela and a new state under a new all-inclusive constitution.

The holding of the first non-racial elections was the culmination of years of struggle and a negotiated settlement which led to the unbanning of the liberation organisations, the release of political prisoners, and the return of exiles.
The 1994 election paved the way towards a new democratic dispensation and a new constitution for the country. Despite the threats of political violence, elections took place in a peaceful and festive atmosphere, proof that a new democracy had dawned in our beautiful country.

It is important to note, however, that "freedom" should include emancipation from poverty, unemployment, racism, sexism and other forms of discrimination. Since political freedom in 1994 South Africans have strove to correct the wrongs of the past, but we are still faced with a number of challenges 23 years into our “new” democracy, with many of these issues are plaguing our country more than ever. Freedom Day therefore serves as a reminder to us that the guarantee of our freedom requires us to remain permanently vigilant against corruption and the erosion of the values of the Freedom Struggle and to build an active citizenry that will work towards wiping out the legacy of racism, inequality, and promoting the rights embodied by our constitution.

On Freedom Day, we as South Africans are afforded the opportunity to make a pledge towards fighting against the legacy of racism and economic inequality, as well as renewing our loyalty to our country and our ever-optimistic commitment to its future.
