1. Agapanthus
This beautiful plant is very popular in South Africa with its blue or white flowers bursting in the summer. Agapanthus leaves are evergreen giving lush colour to the garden year round. The plant can be easily split and planted somewhere else. Agapanthus grow best in partial shade in hot climates.
2. Strelitzia
South Africa is the only country in the world where strelitzias grow naturally but they are loved worldwide. They are a very hardy plant, able to grow in either the sun or shade and cope without water for a long time. Strelitzia are commonly called the Bird of Paradise for its crane shaped flowers often used in flower arrangements.
3. Aloes
All aloe types are a South African favourite for water wise gardens. 5. Dietes
Better known as the African Iris, these water-wise plants require nearly no maintenance and very little water. Dietes can be planted as filler or backdrop shrubs and come in two flower colour options of white or yellow. Dietes can grow in full sun or semi-shaded areas.
Remember to allow new plants time to establish their roots by watering them weekly for the first season.
