Dogs Day Out

It was Roger Caras who said, “Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole”. So it stands to reason that you can’t leave that extra member of your family behind on the weekend! Get yourselves wagging and smiling in the fresh air with these awesome walks.

Walkhaven Dog Park
Honestly this should be called WalkHeaven! With big dams for the dogs AND kids to play in, 22 hectares to go gambol on, a restaurant that caters to both species, and a dog wash-and-go for when you are ready to go home, this is the ideal weekend venue! Humans can even take a braai or picnic along, and pack the cricket ball for some practise… just don’t be alarmed if the sausage and the balls go missing!

Lonehill Park and Koppie

The quaint park in the middle of Lonehill is a great spot for dog owners to enjoy. You can take a picnic basket and a blanket along and let your pup play on the grass while you relax. Dogs need to be kept on a lead while walking around the park but most dog owners generally let their dogs run free when picnicking, as long as they know how to play well with others. You can also take a short walk up to the Lonehill Koppie to get your blood pumping and properly wear the pooches out!

Northcliff Hill

Northcliff Hill is the second-highest point in Johannesburg, perfect for taking in the view of the largest man-made forest in the world! If you want to take it easy with an older hound, pack a picnic basket, umbrella and blanket and park at the top of hill and take a short stroll to a picnic spot. To wear out a puppy reprobate, park at the bottom of the hill and walk to the top.

Delta Park and Café
If you are more city-bound, try a glorious morning stroll in beautiful Delta Park and head to Delta Café afterwards for brekkie. Bikers, runners and pooches are all welcome to sit down, relax and grab a bite to eat. Their menu is quite impressive and reasonably priced. To cool off, there is a doggie well for your pooches to grab a drink after their scratch-and-sniff play session in the park.

Zoo Lake
The tranquil Zoo Lake in the heart of Parkview is a popular spot for picnicking, walking your dog or taking a leisurely boat ride. Dogs will love exploring the grounds and it takes roughly one to two hours to walk around the lake, depending what route you take. You can also head to the lake bed to feed the ducks, but keep your dog is on a lead so the ducks aren't upset, and your dog isn’t attacked!

A few etiquette guidelines:

  • If your dog is reactive to other dogs, slowly socialise them by keeping them leashed and keeping walking until they settle, otherwise rather start in a smaller quieter setting.
  • Similarly, don’t let your unleashed dog approach a leashed dog.
  • Don’t bring your in-season dog.
  • Encourage kids to politely ask owners if they may approach dogs, not just barge over as the most polite dog can get a fright.
  • Pick up your dog’s poop!
  • Don’t bring your dog if they are under 4 months, unvaccinated, and aren’t under tick / flea control.
  • Pack a towel for drying off after a dip in the dam, fresh water for drinking, and a couple of treats to keep your dog’s attention!
