For many, Youth Day is a celebration of what makes us feel young at heart, but how many of us truly remember why this day is so important to South Africans? Read on and learn why we celebrate the 16th of June, why staying young at heart is good for you, and how you can enjoy Youth Day in 2019.
Why We Celebrate Youth Day
Youth Day is celebrated yearly on June 16th as a day to commemorate and remember the sacrifices made by the Sowetan Youth in 1976. On this date, thousands of young South Africans set some of the groundwork for a liberated South Africa. Unfortunately, their protest turned violent and 176 children lost their lives. We celebrate Youth Day every year to recognise the role these brave youths played in leading South Africa to a democracy.
Find Your Inner Youth, It's Healthy
They say that nothing will age you as quickly as a heart growing cold. Enjoying life and not losing faith in the goodness of what life has to offer has shown to lead to some amazing health benefits. From lowering blood pressure and heart rates to decreasing depression and anxiety, finding your inner youth and enjoying life to the fullest is good for body, mind and soul.
How to Celebrate Youth Day This Year
Youth Day brings with it a multitude of celebration opportunities, but however, you decide to spend it is up to you. Visit the Hector Peterson Memorial Museum for an inside look into what the brave students in Soweto sacrificed for future generations. The Apartheid Museum offers a broader look over the era of Apartheid and showcases others who helped to lead South Africa to democracy. For a less serious celebration, do what sets your heart on fire, chase adrenaline on the Gold Reef City roller coasters or enjoy true leisure at the beautiful Johannesburg Botanical Gardens.
June 16th is a day of remembrance and celebrating the youth of the past, present and future. We hope you enjoy this very special day, South Africa.
