What It Really Takes to Move Things Forward

Dear valued clients and friends,

There's something about South Africa's recent ICC Cricket World Cup win that just hits home. Not just the pride, but the reminder that true success is usually less about luck and more about consistency, communication and showing up again and again. Whether it's on the pitch, in business, or in life - the wins come from clarity, from connection, from teams that talk.

And sometimes the best communication doesn't need to look "professional" at all.

I've found that the most effective messages I've received lately didn't come through corporate emails or glossy PowerPoint presentations. They came from quick sketches. A rough drawing on a napkin or scrap paper. A hand gesture while talking through a challenge on a walk. Because once you stop trying to impress and start trying to connect, you often end up actually saying something that sticks.

When you strip things down - simple beats slick. KISS works every time.

Just this week, I found a photo of a whiteboard scrawl I did with a client last year. It was barely legible. But they still have it stuck above their desk, because it made sense to them. We overcomplicate too much and in doing so, lose what's essential. If a message needs a 30-slide pitch deck to land, maybe it wasn't clear in the first place.

Real connection starts when we get face to face.

This Father's Day, my son Alex chose to spend the weekend with me in Johannesburg. No big plans, no staged outings - just the two of us doing what we enjoy. We cycled with my group, took the dogs for a walk, ate simple meals, talked about life. It reminded me that human connection doesn't live in messages or emojis. It lives in shared time.

We're all so connected these days, yet somehow more out of touch. A call is better than a voice note. A chat over coffee says more than a message thread. And nothing beats putting your phone down and just being there, fully present. Especially with those who matter most.

And speaking of being present...

Johannesburg's not perfect. You don't need to look hard to find cracks in the pavement, broken lights, potholes that feel like portals. But the truth is, waiting for someone else to fix it doesn't help. And complaining hasn't filled a single one of those holes. So instead of just pointing out the mess, my cycling group has started patching potholes ourselves. One here, another there - nothing fancy. But it's something.

People often ask: what difference does one small fix make?

And while the well-worn starfish story gets the point across (you know the one - the boy throws a single starfish back into the ocean and says, "It made a difference to that one"), there are other ways to say the same thing.

A friend of mine once described helping as 'doing the dishes at a party you didn't host.' You don't need to take over. You just see something that needs doing - and you do it. Quietly. No ceremony. It's the same in our city. If you spot something you can fix, fix it. Not because it's your job. Just because it helps.

Or think about this:

There's a Japanese concept called kintsugi - the art of mending broken pottery with gold. Instead of hiding the cracks, they highlight them, turning damage into something more valuable. Now, if that's not a perfect metaphor for Johannesburg, I don't know what is. Egoli's a bit rough in places. But there's beauty in fixing it. Especially when we fix it together.

When we choose to act - in homes, in families, in our work - we lead by example. Whether we're communicating a strategy, deepening a relationship or rolling up our sleeves to solve a problem, the same thread runs through it all: clarity, consistency, connection.

That's what we're aiming for at Homes of Distinction. Which brings me to something new we've launched - something small on the surface, but meaningful for anyone considering selling.

For a limited time, we've reduced our commission by 20% to just 4% - a Winter Special designed to help you sell smart, without waiting for the springtime scramble. We already have serious buyers lined up; and this offer is available until 31 August. It's one more way we're showing up, doing the work and helping our clients move forward with confidence.

Keep it simple. Keep showing up. Keep doing what matters.... and we will move things forward!

If you're thinking of selling or buying in the second half of the year - or you just want a sounding board to talk property, communication or connection - I'm here. Let's have a conversation that counts - and if it can be in-person, even better.

Thank you, as always, for reading.

Until next time,

Warm regards,
