Olivedale

A leafy family orientated area which ticks the boxes in terms of convenience and value for money. A favoured area for growing families who have outgrown cluster and townhouse living.

The history of Olivedale, dates back as far as the 1850's where it formed part of the original farms Klipfontein, Driefontein, Olievenhoutspoort and Boskop, which were later subdivided by the sons of the original farmers as was the tradition then.

The great depression of 1928 to 1934 and the crippling drought which lasted for four years brought thousands of platteland farmers to the city.  But many preferred the rural areas and were scattered in the "wild" where "Randburg" and surrounds provided fabulous hunting with game being plentiful and birdlife was aplenty in the hills and valleys of which Hunters Hill bore witness to these early never-to-be-repeated times.  In 1959 the name Randburg was decided by means of a competition and then inaugurated as a municipality.

The Windmill, Olivedale, Randburg, previously used to pump water for the Amsterdam Estate, was located here. Amsterdam Estate was established in 1943 by Mr H. Messias, a diamond dealer who emigrated from Holland before the Second World War.  The estate was then sub-divided to allow for the residences you see today.  The windmill is still there.

Once upon a time you would have driven on dirt roads and could see for miles over a veld to what was Johannesburg.  Now all roads are tarred, and development has taken over this once wild side of rural Johannesburg.

Olivedale Hospital (https://www.netcarehospitals.co.za/Hospital/Netcare-Olivedale-Hospital), a private hospital on the corner of President Fouche & Windsor Way, is part of the Netcare Group.  Their services include 24 hour emergency, 24 hour pharmacy  and they house many specialists with varied disciplines.

Spoilt for choice of shopping centres in close proximity is The All Saints Centre (https://www.allsaintsshoppingcentre.co.za/), which is home to major retailers like Spar, Woolworths and Clicks, and also offers a pet shop, Indian Cuisine, Vetkoek, Italian Cuisine, a perfume shop, bottle store and a stationery shop.

Around the corner is the illustrious Bellairs Mall (http://www.belairshoppingcentre.co.za/), boasting an upmarket gym, a burger joint, breakfast place, Game, Pick & Pay, a pawn shop, a few take away places and a Crazy Store.

Down the road another centre, Northriding Square (https://randburgsun.co.za/northriding-square/), caters for those who require swimming lessons and houses a Checkers, clothing stores and food stores.

There are three retirement villages in Olivedale, all well maintained and recommendable.  There are buses which ferry the silver streakers to the surrounding shopping centres and carers who assist them in shopping for their small delights and necessities.

The Olivedale Library (https://www.nlsa.ac.za/condgrant/index.php/address-list-of-gauteng/401-olivedale) caters for those bookworms who are not engrossed with electronic media. A great selection of books are available, with the history section being addictive.  

There is also the ice rink at the Northgate Mall (https://www.northgate.co.za/). The Mall has recently received a beautiful facelift and offers large corridors and so many shops that one could completely satisfy the retail therapy needed at times. The Dome  (https://www.ticketprodome.co.za/) is across the parking lot, home to many shows and concerts - parking is aplenty. 

There are many nursery schools within close proximity to any home in Olivedale, with the famous Curro Cooper College (https://www.curro.co.za/gauteng/cooper-college-douglasdale-joburg/) catering from Grade R - Grade 10, and Sharonlea Primary School, with grade 7 as their highest grade.  One is spoilt for choice with Kings School (https://thekingsschool.co.za/), Fourways High (https://www.4ways.co.za/), St. Stithians (https://www.stithian.com/), North Riding College (https://www.curro.co.za/gauteng/northriding-college/), the Institute for Hospitality Studies (https://www.privatehotelschool.com/), ETA (https://www.etacollege.com/), Damelin (https://damelinonline.co.za/) and many more.

The average household income for Olivedale is R50 000 - R80 000, an LSM of 10 low and home to +-5162 adults.  20% of homeowners have lived here for 11 years or more, 5% between 8 - 10 years, 21 % between 5 - 7 years  and an influx of 54% less than 5 years.  16% of home owners are pensioners or over the age of 65, with 30% being mature between 50 - 64 and 38% being between 36 - 49 with the youth/young adults coming in between 18 - 35 at 18%.

One could easily choose from a myriad of homes, ranging from R800 000 for a one bedroom, one bathroom apartment to R7 million for an upmarket home in Olivewood Estate.
