In September 2020, the constant digging, drilling, and clanging of construction work would carry through the quiet suburb of Jukskei Park. Normally, this sort of noise is greeted with heavy sighs and rolled eyes, but for Jukskei Meander, the much needed revamp of the center's design and layout was received with high acclaim when it was finally reopened on the 22nd of March.
What's the layout?
Aside from a stunning decorative rework that brings the centre's look and feel into the 2021s, Jukskei Meander's anchor store is a fully upgraded Checker's market that boasts an unprecedented selection of grocery and retail options to cater to a clientbase that expects the very best.
Other retail outlets include the Meander Pharmacy (Still under construction), Quick Fix Cellular, Morroccan Cut Barber, Hao Ke Lai Chinese Food and Sushi, and The Queen pet store (Still under construction). From oriental dining to a quick trim of the beard, Jukskei Meander will soon be a fully fledged shopping experience with all essentials.
Building up the community
For the past decade, the Jukskei Park community has been involved in restoration efforts to build the area up to its unique position as being one of the most sought after areas in Johannesburg. The restoration efforts have been part of an ongoing project to elevate the market value of the Jukskei community as a whole. Jukskei Meander's revamp is the result of this drive.
It's hard to believe that more than a decade ago, the Jukskei community struggled with rampant crime and a growing amount of rundown free standing properties. However, with the spirit of community change, collaboration with police and security companies, and an influx of new homeowners looking to restore local homes, the value of the area has achieved new heights. With a better community as the common goal, positive change has been seen in and around the neighbourhood.
Today, thanks to these restorative efforts, Jukskei Park has become one of the most valued areas within the northern suburbs and with fewer and fewer places to build or develop, property prices have seen a massive uptick from three years prior. According to price indexes, homes that cost R1.5 million a few years ago are now valued at over R2.4 to R3 million.
Focus on Jukskei Park's recreational revamp
Jukskei Park Community Forum is a community-run site with the intention of raising awareness and upgrading the area with help from active citizens and online donations. By contributing time or money they hope to revamp various parks in and around Jukskei Park in an effort to create access to the natural beauty of the area.
There are a number of projects that have been highlighted with various businesses and individual community leaders lending their support. From a brand new jungle gym at Robyn Park to a repaint and rebuild of the bridge at Juweel park, the community effort follows a four step programme of banding together support, rolling out the drive by gathering donations from online to door-to-door, getting to work, and increasing the overall value of the area.
Anyone can get involved and support their impressive efforts by heading to the Jukskei Park Community Forum and finding out more.
