Healthy Pet Food Recipes

A balanced diet is essential to the optimal body and brain function and allows us to lead healthy and happy lives. The same is true for our animals. Knowing where your pets' food is coming from, exactly what's in it and that they will be benefiting from a well-rounded diet can put many pet owners mind at ease.
If you are ready to consider making your own pet food, take a look at the nutritious and easy pet food recipes below:

For Dogs:
Dogs have been our companions for thousands of years and their digestive system has adapted to suit the mutually beneficial relationship. Dogs surprisingly benefit a great deal from grains and vegetables being included in their diets, so here's a simple recipe for your canine companions that can be frozen into individual portions as needed.
Ingredients:
  • 1 ½ cups brown rice
  • 1 ½ cup of rolled oats
  • 1.5 litres of water
  • 4 carrots (grated)
  • 2 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 large marrows (grated)
  • 200g chicken thighs diced and deboned
  • 200g chicken breast diced
  • 200g ox liver
  • 200g chicken hearts
  • 200g minced beef
  • 200g chicken livers
  • 1 cup peas (frozen is fine)
  • 6 cups chopped spinach
Method:
  1. In a large saucepan, heat the water and cook the rice and oats until soft, add more water if needed and set aside.
  2. In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil and add the meat and cook until all browned.
  3. Add the vegetables and cook through for about 5 minutes or until the spinach has wilted.
  4. Thoroughly mix the rice and oat mixture to the meat and vegetable mixture until all ingredients are evenly dispersed.
  5. Allow to cool completely and then divide into 100g portions using cling wrap and freeze. Allow each portion to defrost overnight or during the day and heat in a small pot or pan before serving.
  6. Feed 200g for every 10 kg of body weight daily. So if your dog weighs 10kg feed 100g in the morning and 100g in the evenings.

For Cats:
Cats have very particular dietary needs which should be carefully considered. Unlike dogs, they aren't able to consume many foods we humans do and thrive on a meat-based diet of 60-80% protein. This raw food recipe is ideal for cats, as it mimics their natural diets, remember to throw away any uneaten food and follow the recipe exactly.
Ingredients:
  • 2 kg of chicken thighs (bones and skin included)
  • 400g of chicken hearts
  • 200g chicken livers
  • 2 cups of water
  • 4 large eggs
  • 200mg vitamin B supplement
  • 2000 mg taurine
  • 1.5 tsp salt
  • 200 IU vitamin A
Method:
  1. Prepare the chicken thighs by throwing half the skin and ⅕ of the bones away. Cut the meat into small chunks, put about 70% of these chunks aside.
  2. Grind the remaining meat products together including the chicken thigh bones, chicken hearts, chicken livers and about 30% of the thigh meat together.
  3. In a large bowl, mix the water, eggs, vitamin supplements, and salt together thoroughly.
  4. Mix the egg mixture, ground meat mixture and the chopped thigh mixture together until well combined.
  5. Separate into 60g - 65g batches and freeze individually. Serve one batch twice a day and allow to defrost either overnight or during the day in the fridge. Do not preheat.
