Ants help keep many other insect pests down but at some point or another, their invasion begins to cause more issues than they solve. Ants can become increasingly invasive leading to home structural damage and expensive repairs. If you need to get rid of ants, here are four methods to try before calling in the exterminator.
White Vinegar:
Ants hate the smell of vinegar, cleaning your kitchen counters, pantry, and kitchen cupboards with a half water and half vinegar solution can help keep ants out of the kitchen. Vinegar also confuses the ant sense of smell so the troop won’t be able to follow the pheromones of a scout ant. You can spray this vinegar and water solution on window sills and doorways as well to keep them from coming into your home.
Chalk & Baby Powder:
Chalk & Baby Powder have been a family favourite for getting rid of ants, not only because it’s an effective but it’s also child friendly and can be fun. The calcium carbonate in the chalk affects their ability to follow scents left by scouts who go in search for food. One of the great up sides to chalk is that the kids can express their artistic abilities while keeping ants away from the home.
Boiling Water:
The most effective way to get rid of ants is to kill them at the source. If you can find where the colony is, you’re halfway done with this ant eradication method. Boil a large pot of water and slowly pour it down the ant hill entrance. The water will travel throughout the colony tunnels and kill the ants instantly. Be aware that some colonies can be very large and the water may not penetrate all the way to the queen so this may need to be done a couple of times.
