Bye Bye Fly: 5 Organic ways to get rid of flies

Flies are one of the most annoying pests to have in any home. Their quick reflexes and fast flying speed with their unrivaled agility makes them difficult to whack and eliminate one by one. If you have a fly problem, or just want to ensure that these tiny pests stay out of your home then try out these 5 natural ways to get rid of them.

1. Natural Repellant Decor
That's right, you can get rid of pesky flies and keep your home looking lovely. This fragrant citrus and clove deterrent looks great on your dining room or coffee table, entrance table or outside patio table and are inexpensive to make!

Instructions:
Simply take your favourite citrus fruit and puncture it with multiple whole cloves around the surface of the fruit. The strong smell of the cloves and citrus irritates the flies sense of smell and chases them off.

2. Natural Fly Spray
A repellent spray is a brilliant and effective way to cover your home's interior with a coat of sweet smells that flies absolutely hate.

Instructions
All you need is:
A clean spray bottle
2 tablespoons of natural dishwashing liquid
12 drops of lemon grass
12 drops of peppermint essential oils and one cup of water.
Mix well together in the spray bottle and spray the interior of your home every two weeks of more frequently if needed.

3. DIY Fly Trap
Few people are fans of the commercial fly trap bags you can get from the hardware store as they are filled with foul smelling chemicals and look awful in our gardens. For a more natural option, build your own fly trap that can easily be hidden around the garden.

Instructions
For this fly elimination method, you will need a cleaned empty soda bottle with the head cut off, 1 cup of sugar, 1 cup of water and some over ripe, cut up fruit.
Place the water, sugar, and fruit in the bottom of the soda bottle and replace the top part so it creates a cone leading into the bait, this will prevent the flies from leaving once they're trapped.
Place the trap in your chosen location and allow the scent to attract and trap the flies.
Check on the trap every week and once it is filled with dead flies, dispose of it and replace with a new one.

4. Fly Repelling Plants
Getting rid of flies in the home can be a challenge but preventing them from entering can make the task much easier. Flies can be sensitive to particular smells and fortunately for us, there are plenty of herbs available to help chase them off.
Try planting:
Basil
Bay leaf,
Lavender
Lemongrass
Peppermint around your garden to ward off these buzzing pests.

5. General Maintenance
Prevention is the best method of elimination as they say so ensuring your home isn't a paradise for flies will help in the battle to keep them at bay. Make sure you keep your garden cleared of any pet mess or anything smelly that may attract flies. Keep your kitchen hygienic by wiping down surfaces and cleaning used dishes as soon as possible.

If you have a fly problem, then a combination of all the above methods will help to cut their numbers by an impressive amount.
