As the leaves begin to turn colours and a small chill creeps into the air, nature tells us that it's time to prepare for winter. While we pull out our favourite stew recipes and warmest jackets, we should also take a moment to consider what changes you will need to make for your garden this autumn and upcoming winter. Here are three points to take into consideration when planning your winter watering routine.
Change in watering times:
It's common knowledge that during winter the days grow shorter and the nights become longer, and with more time that the sun is down, the colder your garden will get. Your garden will become more vulnerable to frost damage and taking a couple of precautions to prevent frost should be taken. Slowly change your watering times to fit the daylight hours, between sunrise and 15h00.
Change in watering amounts:
During the winter months, gardens will require less water as the sun won't be evaporating as much moisture as it would in summer. Reduce the amount of water given to the plants by a third during autumn and then down to half during winter.
What you should keep damp:
There will be specific plants which will require more water than most during winter and it will come as no surprise considering that these are the plants which usually thrive during the colder months. Keep the soil of your edible garden and your winter annuals damp throughout the winter months and watch them thrive.
With the abundance of beautiful plants and flowers available as winter annuals and edibles, there's no reason to have a drab, brown winter garden this year. Consider these watering tips this autumn for a luscious garden and enjoy.
