A Favourite Family Dinner: Let’s Make Burgers

Family dinners should be filled with the food and people you love most in the world. Burgers aren’t just for restaurant eating, and you don’t need to buy pre-made burger patties for tasty flavourful burgers at home. Making burger patties that are healthy and tasty is very easy, but before we divulge our secret patty recipe and the pan get fried up, here are a few tips to get the most out of burger night with the whole family.

Get Everyone Involved:
Burgers can be a very quick meal to prepare if you can get all hands on deck helping with the food preparation. Have the kids help out with washing and slicing lettuce and tomato, grating cheese, buttering rolls (if you want to have bread rolls with your burgers) and help prepare all the toppings and sides.

Have Fun with Toppings:
Burgers are a beautiful thing that can have all the nutrition you need in a meal. You get the carbohydrates in the bread bun for long-lasting energy, the protein in the burger patty and the fiber and vitamins in the toppings if you choose them right. Everyone has their own preferences and tastes, while someone may like their burger with no toppings at all, someone else may want every topping that is made available, so don’t construct the burgers for your family, let them have fun and put the toppings on themselves.

Make it Healthy:
The recipe for the patties below is healthy to start but the unhealthy part of a burger is the added extras. Substitute potato chips for zucchini chips to eliminate the excess carbs, gluten, and oil. If you’re carb conscious, simply remove the burger bun. Grill some of the toppings that you would usually be frying up such as mushrooms, onions, and bacon. Be careful with what sauces are available, mayonnaise and store-bought tomato sauce are full of unhealthy oils and sugars, look for healthier alternatives.

Now, the Recipe:

Ingredients:
90% lean beef mince 450g
1 large egg (for binding)
½ tsp ground coriander
½ tsp paprika
½ tsp salt
Dash of ground black pepper
½ tsp crushed garlic

Method:
1. Put all ingredients in a mixing bowl and thoroughly mix together.
2. Divide into 4 portions, roll into balls and flatten until patties are about 2cm thick.
3. Heat some oil in a non-stick pan until hot, place patties in the pan until sealed on both sides and turn the heat down.
4. Cook to preference.

Final Tip:
Always remember that cooking is about having fun while creating great food to be loved by friends and family. Adding to a recipe or taking something away is never discouraged in cooking and experimenting will allow you to make it your own.
