4 things to do on Heritage Day that do not involve braaing

Whether you know it as 'Heritage Day', 'Shaka Day' or 'National Braai Day', the 24th of September is fast approaching and it's time to think about how you want to spend the public holiday. 

Heritage Day is a public holiday which we use to celebrate all of the wonderfully diverse cultures and beliefs which come together to make up our rainbow nation. As everyone knows, Heritage Day usually means it's time to scour your kitchen for the braai tongs and buy some boerewors. But what if braaiing isn't your thing? Perhaps you don't have the magic touch when it comes to browning boerewors. Or maybe you're just looking for something different to do this Heritage Day. 

If you're feeling out-braai-ed and you are looking for something to do this Heritage Day, why not use the public holiday as an opportunity to go out and learn about and explore some of South Africa's wonderful cultures? 

We've put together a list of 4 places you can visit where you will be able to learn more about our country's history, our rich heritage as South Africans and a little bit about our colourful cultures. 

Maropeng 

What better way to spend Heritage Day than learning about the history of humankind at a world heritage site? Learn about how our shared common heritage that stretches back millions of years, from the very beginning of humankind until now. Voortrekker Monument 

The Voortrekker Monument in Tshwane (Pretoria) is situated in a nature reserve and commemorates the history of the Afrikaans people. The monument offers an interesting insight into the great trek and Afrikaans heritage and culture; and is home to the world's longest historical marble frieze. 

Apartheid Museum 

Visiting the Apartheid Museum gives you an excellent opportunity to learn about the rise and fall of apartheid, and the impact it had on South African culture. Discover the struggles and achievements which carved out the democracy we live in today and how they shaped our shared heritage as South Africans. 

Museum Africa 

Visit Museum Africa to learn about the African continent's incredibly rich and interesting history, and all the colourful cultures and civilisations which have thrived here.
